Jazzpodium: „Sprengt die Klangerwartungen“

Den Klang von “Vibes Beyond” prägen die Kompositionen von Roland Neffe, die er schon seit seinen frühen Triobesetzungen konsequent weiter entwickel hat und die unmittelbar eine eigene Handschrift erkennen lassen. Diese individuelle musikalische Sprache sowie die Verwendung von Vibraphon und Marimba eröffnet dieser Band einen umfangreichen, klanglichen Spielraum, weit weg vom Sound bekannter Vertreter des Vibraphons.

Musik die sich bewusst über Grenzen hinwegsetzt und dennoch eindeutig dem Jazz zuordenbar ist. Mit dem Drummer Reinhardt Winkler und dem Bassisten Peter Herbert wird “Vibes Beyond” zu einem hochkommunikativen Projekt dreier gleichberechtigter Partner.

The sound of this power trio is characterized by Roland Neffes original compositions that have developed continually since his early trios, and vividly demonstrate a personal style. The bands music is a melting pot of various contemporary styles of music – a symbiosis of avant-garde sounds and down to earth grooves.

It is music that transcends conventional boundaries, yet still retains its jazz identity. In drummer Reinhard Winkler and bassist Peter Herbert, Roland Neffe has found two outstanding and dynamic partners for “Vibes Beyond“.

Die drei Berliner Musiker präsentieren lupenreinen Trio-Jazz in ganz eigener und sofort vollkommen unverwechselbarer Klanglichkeit. Kein Schlagzeug, kein Klavier – statt dessen Dobro und Marimba beziehungsweise Vibrafon. Nur der Bass, unverzichtbar für Bauch und Füße nahezu aller Musik, hält auch im Wood & Steel Trio den Laden zusammen, hinter dessen zugezogenen, ausgebleichten Vorhängen offenbar an einer neuen Formel des freien, dabei eng aufeinander bezogenen Spiels dreier Musiker geforscht wird. Eine Geheimzutat dieser Band scheint schon mal ihr in vielen überraschenden Farben schimmerndes Instrumentarium selbst zu sein.

Es geht nicht um Clashs, nicht um Brüche, es geht um Klang, um Klänge, die nicht nur unsere Hörnerven erreichen, sondern zu berühren vermögen.

The trio format is as omnipresent and idiomatic in jazz as the string quartet is to classical music. And the vast majority of jazz trios are comprised of piano, bass and drums – the piano trio – to many the supreme creative discipline in jazz. “Secret Ingredient”, the debut album offers pure trio jazz in a highly personal and unmistakable sonic conception. There is no drum set, no piano, instead we hear dobro and marimba or vibes. Only the bass, the irreplaceable anchor for heart and feet in almost all music, is retained.

While the substances mentioned in the band’s name are the constituent ingredients of most other instruments, Neffe, Kögel and Muellbauer take the raw matter to extreme places while working their sonic magic.

Musikalische Tagebucheinträge im buchstäblichen Sinn sind diese Miniaturen, die Eisler im Exil in Hollywood geschrieben hat – nach Texten von Brecht, Hölderlin Pascal und – Eisler. Es sind kurze, eindringliche Lieder von einer intimen Direktheit, die vom Leben auf der Flucht und in der Emigration. Diese Lieder haben nichts von Ihrer Brisanz und Aktualität eingebüßt – im Gegenteil.

Das Wood & Steel Trio und Michael Schiefel vereinen einen respektvollen Umgang mit dieser großartigen Musik mit frei-assoziativen Improvisationen. Durch die Umsetzung der Klaviervorlage mit Marimba-, Vibraphon, Dobro und Kontrabass, treten die Farben in Eislers Musik wie in einem Holzschnitt plastisch hervor und bieten dem einzigartigen Michael Schiefel eine provokante Spielwiese für seine Textdeutung.

Written in his Hollywood refuge to words by Brecht, Hölderlin, Pascal and himself, these miniatures are Eisler’s musical and personal diary. They are brief and intimately direct songs about life in exile and emigration). These songs have lost none of their volatility and relevance – quite the opposite.

The Wood & Steel Trio and Michael Schiefel combine a respectful treatment of this exquisite music with freely associative improvisations. The re-orchestration of the original piano score with marimba, vibraphone, dobro and double bass lends the beautiful colours in Eisler’s music with a three-dimensional vibrancy and presents the unique Michael Schiefel with a provocative playground for his interpretation.

Zu ihren Stärken zählen nicht nur ihre instrumentalen Fähigkeiten im Triolog, als etwas ganz Besonderes erweisen sich ihre melodischen Kompositionen, die sie gemeinsam „On Stage“ erforschen .

Auf diesem Boden kann sich das wohl wichtigste und bekannteste Element des Jazz an- und aufregend entfalten – die Improvisation.

Their strengths include not only their instrumental  skills in the triologue, but also their melodic compositions, which they bring along and explore together „On Stage“, prove to be very special.

On this basis the probably most important and well-known element of jazz can unfold and exhilarate – the improvisation.

Above&Beyond ist die um Vibraphon erweiterte Konstellation der Band „Trionauts“.
Dieses Quartet formt einen sehr eigenständigen Klang, der sich aus der Kombination Vibraphon/Marimba mit Klavier ergibt und an dem sich die Kompositionen von Tino, Emanuel und Roland orientieren. Das Quartet arbeitet zur Zeit an seinem neuen Album/CD.

Above&Beyond is the extended version of the band „ Trionauts“.
This quartet forms a new sound and new tunes that features the compositions of Tino Derado, Emanuel Hauptmann and Roland Neffe in the field of contemporary jazz. The quartet is currently working on its new album/CD.
